Residential Architecture

In this refurbishment project, it was intended to redesign a duplex flat, with 210m2, reorganizing it to meet the wishes of its owner. As it was a flat that had been previously restored, it presented itself, however, with a poorly defined identity, where the old and the modern were mixed in a rather incoherent way, which took away some of its natural charm.

Although the intervention was quite drastic in relation to changing the way the spaces communicate, especially on the entrance floor (upper floor), it aimed to, at the same time, recover the original character of the building's architecture through the reuse of typical architectural elements to which it dates back, namely the nineteenth century.

The spaces were therefore reorganized, opening not only the living room to the entrance hall, but also making it communicate with the kitchen and promoting a wider connection between the two rooms that already existed, which has largely benefited the whole social area of the house, ensuring greater unity between all the spaces.

The access staircase to the lower floor was also renovated, having its lines refined and assuming a more contemporary language with the creation of a last set of loose steps fixed to the wall, which would match the more contemporary look of the circulation areas of this floor.

The bedrooms were kept, but the sanitary installations were redesigned and the access to the one in the suite, was changed to guarantee some light through the door banner and a better distribution of the space, as it was intended.

The final result, therefore, enhanced the architecture of the pre-existence in the aspects that were most distinctive, recovering the high openings, the more traditional woodwork and the ceiling mouldings, which once existed there, and at the same time providing a more contemporary character to the areas of circulation and access to all the living spaces in the house.
